Research Email Template
Interested in getting involved in research? Don't know how to ask? Worry not, as we have provided an email template to use to ask various labs if they'd be interested in having you! Keep in mind that this is just a template, meaning certain details may be added or omitted as you see fit.
Dear Dr. ______,
I hope all is well! My name is _____ and I am a ___(grade)___ majoring in __(major)___. I see that the __(name of the lab)__Lab does research in seeing/studying ____(briefly state what the lab does research in)__. I find this interesting because I would like to expand my knowledge on ___(what specifically you want to expand your knowledge about)__, and I have been wanting to expand my knowledge/abilities in research. I would love to work under your mentorship because I feel that the community the ___(name of lab)__ Lab fosters represents a welcoming and great environment for me to grow academically and personally. I was wondering if we could schedule a time to talk about this research and discuss any research opportunities for the __(fall/spring/summer)__ semester. Below I attached my resume and look forward to discussing opportunities.
Thank you for your time,
(your name)
Where to Find Research Opportunities?
There are many ways to get involved in research depending on your interests and career goals:
1. Explore Academic Departments:
Visit department websites (such as Biology, Microbiology & Immunology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, etc.) and look through faculty research profiles. Identify labs doing work you’re genuinely interested in, then email the professor or lab manager to ask if they are taking undergraduate researchers.
2. Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH):
If you are interested in dentistry or oral health–related research, EIOH offers both clinical and laboratory-based research opportunities. This is a great place to get exposure to patient-centered research, dental technology development, and oral disease prevention. n.
